‘…to build that optimistic future that is Roddenberry’s essential vision?’ That is very much going to be at the heart of Starfleet Academy.
I certainly hope so. Star Trek should be optimistic. The Federation is a utopia. We don’t need grungy pessimism. Every other sci-fi is already doing that.
I don’t totally disagree, but I don’t agree either. Star Trek touches on a lot of issues of today, just from a futuristic perspective. It uses aliens to talk about race, for example. It doesn’t ignore race issues because their society isn’t racist anymore. It just recontextualizes it so people of today will see it and internalize it, but they won’t be offended by it.
The thing that makes great sci-fi is using their lense to examine real topics of today. If it doesn’t do this then it can only be mediocre at best.

I will wait until the reviews roll in. Not really interested in more Discovery-era content. Still waiting for a maroon uniform era show.
You know if that happened the internet fans would complain about another prequel.
Not that I agree with them, I would love to see it.
If you recall, there was all this noise around Season 1 and Season 2 of Discovery because the streaming service, they were like, ‘Oh, it’s like a turnaround on a cop show.’ I’m like, ‘No, you don’t understand. It’s eight months of visual effects turnaround, and we’re not gonna rush that.’
I most certainly do not recall that, and it says a lot about the people running CBS All Access at the time.
Idk, “It’s like a turnaround cop show” kind of sounds a lot like “Screw you I don’t want to pay for another streaming service”. Perhaps he just misheard absolutely everyone.
I haven’t watched Discovery past episode 6 or 7 of season 1 (after the klingon sex scene, I tapped out) . I take it they’re 1000 years in the future now, and that’s when this series takes place?
If so, oof, it will be hard to identify with a millenium of progress, unless they pull a Futurama and have everything rebuilt a few hundred years in (after the second coming of Jesus of course). Why not go back to the Harve Bennett-era academy series for inspiration? Or set it after Nemesis?
The only redeeming grace for me so far is having Tawny Newsome (or is it Trondy Newman?) in the writers room. She is an absolute delight
I assume you don’t care about spoilers, but just in case…
Discovery season three spoilers
There have indeed been some significant setbacks over the centuries.
First there were the temporal wars, the full ramifications of which have not been fully explored, but were likely pretty devastating.
These were followed by the one-two punch of a dilithium supply crisis, followed by “The Burn,” which caused most of the existing dilithium supplies to go inert and/or explode. This had the effect of making interstellar travel extremely challenging, and many planets became isolationist in the name of protecting themselves.
These issues have all been resolved, but they had a large impact on the development of…everyone, really.
Interesting, thanks!
Discovery is meh but I watch it just to finish it off. I love SNW like everyone of course.
I’ll give this a chance, since I was not into the idea of the show Gen V until it came out and kicked ass.
Wait. Gen V got good? I noped when it was consistently Orange County in depth and MTV’s Real World in manufactured edge. 🤷🏼♂️
It’s consistent with the boys, if you like the boys you’d do well to finish the series as shit gets real, and this show is clearly going to connect with the boys season that’s coming up
I don’t think it’s relevant to make more 32st century content.
And, isn’t Star Trek: Legacy already supposed to be the “next next generation” sequel?
“Legacy” is an imaginary show. It’s never been put into development, and there’s no indication that will change.
Please. They don’t tease a new show by accident, or on the hopes alone. They also don’t increment the Enterprise letter without some solid buy-in from the network. Legacy is happening.
Literally no one but Terry Matalas has “teased” anything, and he’s been very open about the fact that there’s no movement whatsoever on it becoming a reality.

I’m not the one to ask.

None of that is true.
S31 was repurposed into a movie but it was on development for some time. Legacy was just wishful thinking by Terry Matalas.
IMHO Picard should have ended with an USS Picard instead of a new Enterprise. It was clearly just a hook from Matalas trying to get a new show
Is weed legal where you are? Seems plentiful.
Where’s 32nd St?
