Primer:

1. Usenet is for text, not for piracy. Just because you can share giant files over NNTP, that does not mean that you should. I mean, the IRC supports “file sharing” too, but there are much better protocols for that.
2. The main hurdle trying to abuse NNTP for piracy is to find a Usenet provider that actually mirrors binaries. I am not aware of any free one, as it takes very much traffic and disk space.

I know, but most people won’t. :-)

One of the reasons might be that the number of SVN hosting facilities has decreased over the past two decades.

I know, but most people are lazy these days (and self-hosting stuff in the EU has become a legal battle against every week’s new rules).

Oh, come on. It wasn’t that bad! At least it granted (and still grants) the freedom of choosing which VCS shall make your day harder than necessary.

Codeberg is supposedly located in the EU while not requiring self-hosting, maybe that’s why.

At least they’re less obvious about it.

Good news. Hopefully this will help to finally break the de facto monopoly of Microsoft’s GitHub and bring the distributed aspect of Git - away from gatekeeper platforms - back into the foreground.

I read a lot of music-related blogs, review sites and a few selected magazines. No online “recommendation system” needed.

A few thoughts on this:

• Debian is, in my opinion, oversized for an OPZ2. If it absolutely has to be Linux (does it?), Alpine or Void might be worth a closer look.
• Why SFTP? Wouldn’t SCP be enough?
• Automatic updates are risky for a device that is supposed to run always. Instead, I would recommend sending update notifications and then manually applying an update from time to time. If the device no longer boots up, you often don’t even notice it.
