Regardless of that the problem is not binary issue. A problem is the people demoralizing the individual, sure, but this is a contributing factor to the individuals inaction. The individuals inaction is a problem as well and for said individual this is the worse of the 2 problems, as it is the main one they can act on. You can complain about other people being tone deaf and that is valid, those people are rude, but it’s not moving you forward
But you still have to take steps to do it or your hand will never get better. Granted it’s easier if people give you support but depending on where you are at in life that can’t necessarily be something you can count on. So you have to break it down into a manageable step and attack it at that point. If you’re having trouble getting out bed, focus on just getting out of bed. Or don’t, just call a doctor from bed and do telemedicine there if possible. Whatever works.
It sounds callous to someone that’s deep in it but the reality of the situation is that excuses won’t alleviate your situation. You have to find what you can do, if you can’t do something then it is what it is but you also have to accept that the world does not exist without consequence and you will probably have to accept the consequences of that action (people being frustrated with you for flaking, trouble at work, etc). Pursue accommodations when possible to alleviate the burden but also recognize that depression is a mix of neurochemical and behavioral components. You have a degree of control over severity of the behavioral part and it is about the choices you make with what how you spend your time

This isn’t really true, they don’t write a separate os for the fancier TVs. The $5000 83” oled still does all this. It’s not as bad as the $75 37” lcd that’s heavily subsidized but that’s only partially because of less intrusive ads. The ads are still there, just not as much, the data collection is still there, and the tv is just runs smoother because the hardware is generally (a bit) more powerful
Ensure it works offline before buying would be my only advice here. Also don’t be surprised if it still has ads, I know android tv can have ads without connecting to the internet because it’ll have them cached from a fresh install. Adblocking on android tv is a pain because the caching of ad content can make you think it’s not working
I’ve heard this and while they are sturdier they generally also have worse panels from an image quality standpoint. If you’re buying a $400 60” lcd tv it probably won’t be all that different but if you’re looking for an oled level tv these panels will be noticeably worse in comparison
Another alternative is projectors. Can be impractical in many scenarios but often come with a pretty barebones OS, especially if you get a proper one and not one of the goofy portable ones they sell for $100
While I overall like my lg tv they have some shitty things from both a tech perspective (can’t play or pass through dts audio bc of licensing bullshit though this may not be the case on newer models) and an anti consumer perspective (data collection and ads)
On the first point you can circumvent by using e-arc and avr
On the second point you have to dig through settings and make sure sales of your personal data is not enabled (it is by default and can be re-enabled with updates)

This will block the ads in the os as well as hamper their data collection, somewhat. The last three specifically will also block updates.
You can also root webos in some scenarios which gives you certain options to block ads in YouTube and such

Any tv with google/android tv, Roku, etc built in is just as bad or worse. Most if not all manufacturers engage in OS level data collection.

I mean therein lies the problem. If you remove mass storage devices but allow cds then that’s just a different attack vector to exploit. You could potentially make it so there is no way to interface with any kind of storage but then when someone finds a way to break things open with a hid device you now have no practical way to fix the issue (plus working with the machine will be a nightmare)

There are people who have claimed to have been banned for sharing their servers with family and friends. In a lot of cases plex has reversed the bans, to be fair, but not always.
But that underscores the issue with plex: you don’t own the rights to your locally stored media or the ability to stream it using their software. They do, and they can terminate it at any point for violation of copyright. which means literally every user of plex, unless there’s someone out there literally serving just their home videos or something.
Like I said in my original post I don’t think it’s necessarily a “burn it all down” situation. If you’ve paid for plex and/or have your library all set up might as well keep it there until something changes. But if you’re just starting out or you got banned? Jellyfin all the way. At least then you know you’ll always be able to stream your media as long as the hardware works

I did find articles about them banning entire hosting providers in Germany they found suspect because of high rates of pirate servers on said hosting, maybe that’s what I was remembering. Plex is more mature than jellyfin and has a ton of financial backing but in my experience jellyfin is 90% of the way there (especially if you use kodi as a frontend to make up for jellyfins weakest attribute, the inconsistent and often weak player apps). Plexamp is probably the biggest disparity, jellyfin has music players that are somewhat there but Plexamp is really good. That said it’s worth it, imo, to forgo that to have a solution that is entirely local and not reliant on a company that is increasingly worried about their association with media piracy
TV stations used to do this in the late 90s and early 2000s (maybe they still do it, idk) to increase ad space given the fixed time formats of the medium. Hulu doesn’t really need to do that, they can just make the ad breaks longer.
they could be doing it, it could be for nefarious reasons like making longer ad breaks seem perceptually shorter, it could be something stupid like they’re use the masters that were destructively edited by the above process (see 90s cartoons like ren and stimpy, Rockos modern life, Beavis and butthead, etc that retain censorship to this day because the original masters no longer exist unmolested), or (imo most likely) it could just be a technical issue. Most/all streaming networks have totally garbage apps and it wouldn’t shock me at all if their player introduced issues that fucked with timing at the expense of draconian drm or just bad lowest bidder coding. Of course, it could also be a problem with your setup
Easiest way to resolve these issues is piracy. You already have a plex server, nice. I recommend jellyfin to anyone starting out. Plex is fine but they have reserve the right to snitch on users in certain situations so fuck plex. If media companies stop being greedy and splitting catalogs all over the place then maybe reconsider. The music industry figured out how to have multiple vendors that all have 95+% of each others catalog, movies and tv can do the same. They’ve even gotten to the point where the apps are as good or better than my pirated library. My flac library is imperceptibly different from apple lossless, they have lyrics ready to go for the overwhelming majority of tracks and most are time synced (which I can’t be bothered to do for a 2tb music library, automated lrc downloaders are often wrong in my experience), their app has great ui, and with recent updates I can even remove vocals from literally any song. I’ll happily pay $120 a year to not bother with maintaining a ratio on red or dealing with mislabeled shit on soulseek

Depends on the piracy site. If you go to some of the pirate streaming sites or the blogs that host tons of pirated software with 30 rapidgator links that die after a month (instead of just using a torrent like a normal sensible person trying to share a 2-30+gb file that is begging to be taken down) without Adblock it’s absolutely comical how many ads there are. Even with Adblock those are the sites that manage to still have ads because they’re on the cutting edge of sketchy shit. It’s like seeing a late 90s to early 2000s website with how much random bullshit is pasted everywhere
Despite that I’m pretty sure that Amazon, google, etc do far more nefarious shit behind the scenes in terms of tracking/fingerprinting you and collecting data to sell

Fuck that. Your metaphor is bullshit. The difference is a person living in extreme poverty can’t generally make huge differences with saving $5 a week. But someone with depression can make significant progress with small behavioral changes to build momentum in the direction they want to move towards. This is not conjecture, this is evidence based both via CBT and behavior activation theory.
Frankly I would argue pushing the narrative of “well it’s really hard so you might as well just not try” is far more damaging than what the comic outlines. The behavior in the comic is rude and disenfranchising but the behavior in some of these comments is enabling and actively works against someone potentially seeking treatment
As stated in one of my other replies what do you propose as an alternative? Let people with mental illness languish and send them good vibes? Do you also send thoughts and prayers after mass shootings?
