of course, i posted this as a joke (like “thanks Obama”), i really doubt his review had anything to do with the company going bankrupt, but seeing the downvotes i’ll really think twice before commenting

THANKS MKBHD
It’s Fiskars
Design aside I still cannot fathom why people are so excited about Mediatek phone, I mean, while performance is not bad, the efficiency is shit on Mediatek SoCs
BTW what is this site anyway? Does anyone have problems scrolling or is it just me?
yeah, but i’m talking about such minor things like using non stock launcher, custom keyboard etc., anyway custom roms are harder now, OEMs make unlocking bootloader harder, also developing is harder itself with non snapdragon SoCs
No combined notification+ringer volume control? No non-dismissable notifications?
both of those can be seen as a plus for some people, also you always can change the launcher to one without bottom search bar, did people forgot how to customize their android?
Xiaomi and OnePlus phones still have it
I might have worded myself wrong because English isn’t my native language, but I’ve already said my intention wasn’t to mock his decision to guard his data by not explicitly giving them to Google but the meaninglessness of his way to do so.
Because by using an always connected Android phone with all other 3rd party spyware like Facebook etc. he’s already vulnerable, he’s using RCS for messaging, he’s being tracked on so many levels and already owned by corporations, at this point the manual contact sync has little to no sense especially it’s visibly harder for him to do it that way to the point he’s complaining about it.
By saying I use Google provided sync I’m not trying to one up him because I know it’s a trade-off between privacy and convenience, same with Google Pictures, I respect his choice to not use it’s built-in cloud pictures synchronisation but IMHO on a phone without an SD card support but I won’t be silent when he starts complaining after losing all his photos because he didn’t to back them up
Don’t get me wrong I’m all for privacy, but degoogling without an on premise private cloud or similar solution is kinda troublesome at least
Yeah, in many editors Ctrl+H does search and replace
Yeah I understand that, i just wanted to show the futility of such small choices while using an Android phone, using stock ROM and using all it’s online features, it’s like using Facebook but with names switched and posting those chains saying you don’t allow to use your photos, instead of just writing the platform, also he’s IT, not some 60yo aunty who just got the phone
Also it’s an Android related community, not !privacy or !grapheneos ffs
Often I find myself downvoted for comments suggesting cloud based or non-FOSS solutions, even in non privacy or FOSS related communities, while I’m a fan of open source and privacy, sometimes those are IMO still a better choice for a layman end user, I understand Lemmy people are more tech/privacy/FOSS oriented, but this it’s bordering with toxic zealotism
Dude at my work after switching phones complained he didn’t have old contacts yet, when I asked why he won’t use Google built-in synchronisation, he said he doesn’t really trust them, I was like “dude, they already know a bunch about you, your contact list won’t make a difference”, the weirdest thing it’s we’re both IT guys
Meanwhile I sync everything with Google since I bought my first Android in 2012
Edit I’m appalled by the amount of downvotes my comment received, anybody care on elaborating on why? I’m genuinely interested in the mindset of people who downvote such seemingly innocent comment
Yeah, “I’m ignorant so I’ll say something” lol
not wanting to be rude but either I’ve worded myself poorly or you may have reading comprehension problems, regarding the wireless charging I’ve meant the magnets they introduced in iPhone 13 (?) became a part of qi2 charging standard, it’s an innovation in my book, also the stylus thing, i didn’t mean modern ipad or samsung styluses but those pieces of plastic we used with resistive touch screens of PDAs back in the days before iPhone, while you could use your finger, it wasn’t precise enough because interface was cursor oriented instead of finger oriented like iOS was
wireless charging? i mean magnets in qi2 are apple’s idea, also i wonder how current smartphone market would look like without iPhone, would we still have stylus operated resistive screens? i know they weren’t the first ones with capacitive touchscreens and finger oriented UI, but whey popularized it, definitely made it mainstream
That’s fundamental problem with Google apps, every one looks different, made by different teams with different set of guidelines, messages now look different than Gmail for example
Yeah, just have a Motorola😝 I mean it’s in lineage on my old Motorola, anyway I have an OnePlus phone now and miss it dearly, this and twist for camera, changing songs by holding volume buttons etc
It’s an option in my OnePlus too but Motorola’s gestures have the upside of working consistently everywhere, every time, while double press power works only when screen is off (on OnePlus at least) also it clashes with emergency menu in OnePlus (5x power button)
It’s OnePlus, I use v for Fleshlightflashlight but it’s wonky (works like 60% times) and it needs screen to be off
Guessing not much content goes above 60 fps on mobile, except interface, played with describing long lists up and down, still barely noticed any difference
yeah, but it’s dialogue, when what you’re saying is met with disagreement you stop talking, though in many cases it’s misunderstanding, people not getting the joke or what I want to convey (not native English speaker here BTW), generally i find people here more ideology-driven and rarely getting the jokes, than on reddit, it was more loose back there (mandatory fuck spez obvs)
