The alternatives… That once they shows a bit of growth and promise gets bought up by a bigger and greedier company, that then gets bought up by one of the big corpos and carefully discontinued in favor of their own product.
A classic nerd from Norway.

Yeah, theres a very good reason I dont use Spotify anymore. Not any music streaming services at all. Only good ol’ reliable mp3s. Their idea of “service” is to silently remove songs from my playlists as their licenses expire, and then top it by replacing “Hotel California” with the WORST cover song I’ve ever heard.
Imagine if Sony stopped selling on Steam, and Steam in response silently replaced my “Days Gone” game with “The Day Before”? I would have been so pissed. But with music it seems that is totally okay.
Once. It’ll better be one hell of an ad because it will lose them my subscription. I stopped watching television back in the late 90s because of all the ads, before even I had internet to watch pirated media. I don’t wear clothes with too visible logos. Just saying to illustrate how this ain’t an empty threat.
Losing a single customer probably doesn’t matter to them. But I hope Im not the only one?
They can. But theres a reasonable level of trust that a security feed has been kept secure and not tampered with by the owner if he doesnt have a motive. But what if not even the owner know that somewhere in their tech chain, maybe the camera, maybe the screen, maybe the storage device, maybe all 3, the image was “improved”. No evidence of tampering. We’ll have the police blaming Count Rugen for a bank robbery he didnt do, but the camera clearly shows a six fingered man!
How long until we got upscalers of various sorts built into tech that shouldn’t have it? For bandwidth reduction, for storage compression, or cost savings. Can we trust what we capture with a digital camera, when companies replace a low quality image of the moon with a professionally taken picture, at capture time? Can sport replays be trusted when the ball is upscaled inside the judges’ screens? Cheap security cams with “enhanced night vision” might get somebody jailed.
I love the AI tech. But its future worries me.
Im probably wrong, it isn’t easy to judge properly with so few pixels, but it looks like each floor on the enterprise is half the height of a cargo crate. That can’t be right?
Is Burnham still the one-man away-team? The better episodes was where more of the crew got to contribute.
Don’t you give me that sarcastic Vulcan salute!
NOT any of the movies. Avoid them until you know you enjoy the tvseries. And I believe you should start at Strange New Worlds. A recent series that quickly gets itself into what we enjoy about Star Trek.
You COULD see if you enjoy Discovery too. I think its a bit too far from what makes Star Trek fun (team work and optimism), and it too quickly delves into mirror world stuff, which you really should have more context about. Picard is a bit too much dependent on knowing stuff from The Next Generation. Lower Decks is making fun of Star Trek lore. And Enterprise and anything older is good and watchable if you enjoyed Strange New Worlds. They all have a bit slow first season though. The Original Series is too old to be watchable for me.
No one can agree on what woke actually means
Truth. Word trends take some time to spread around the world, and by the time it reached me it was used mostly as a derogatory term. I could not figure out what it meant from context. Initially I thought it was related to red-pillers because it was used by the same kind of angry people.
I had to look up the definition eventually.
I’ll bet (without knowing for sure) Roddenberry’s idea of the Federation didnt start out as a police state. But like with currency, it is hard for many writers to imagine humanity evolving past the need for policing our own and enforcing laws.
Can’t LGBT+ be included unless its meaningful? I dont like that “pandering” argument. It is too easy to misuse, too subjective.
I want them included in bad shows as much as in good shows. I want a random background person to be gay just as much as an important character. Best case would be if we didnt even raise an eyebrow on seeing a LGBT+ character and rather critizise their acting or plot instead of blaming “pandering”. I dont hear anyone call forcing a unecessary romantic straight subplot into a plot for “pandering”.
Spy v Spy, Star Trek’in edition.
When has that ever stopped them?
Still nerdy if one also enjoy other anime stuff more than the average person. I consider anime nerds as nerds.
really into the science behind physical training
Yes! Thats a nerd. We nerds used to joke that those soccer fans who knew every team and player, and their strengths, those were still nerds even if they wouldnt admit it.
It wasnt when and where I grew up. The stereotype was still the “Revenge of the nerds” or “Steve Urkel”. But I kinda took the label as a shield when people used it on me and I learned what it meant. Why should I be ashamed of enjoying digging into computers and programming? Why would enjoying books or non-mainstream comics be such a negative thing? Why would playing more advanced video games be sad? Or finding math fun? And why was I the only one who would admit to enjoying it at school? I know a few people had some shared interest, but they never spoke of it at school. Also why yell out loudly that whatever I was lost in was utterly boring to them? And when reaching the next level of education and meeting people LIKE ME, the nerd label hardened. They were nerds, I was nerd. I learned about roleplaying games, MTG, even more advanced video games, that stuff that seemed was the domain of most nerds.
The nerd label meant someone who had multiple interests into stuff that average people called “boring”. Finding people who called themselves nerds meant that they very likely shared some interests with me, or could teach me something new I would find interesting. So I am still a bit sore that people who bullied me for being a nerd later proudly declare themselves nerds for ONLY playing such a simple game as World of Warcraft when that was popular. It is about using a word for what seemed like it had its own meaning back then, who now have become a synonym for “gamer”.
/u/pjhenry1216@kbin.social I dont consider that gate-keeping. I would welcome all and any to enjoy the things nerds enjoy. I just want to have a name for the subculture I joined and found belonging in. Words like goth have meaning still, and it isnt gatekeeping to assume it means people who enjoys dressing in all-black.
Is “nerd” such a negative thing anymore? Seems like its been watered down to mean “I play at least one video game”.
I use the term “classic nerd” for what was once “nerd” because I havent found another word that covers it.
Give it to a bunch of bored monks. If they could make something as useless as two chained sticks into a cool weapon…
Linux itself isn’t a company. And cant be bought up even if Linux Foundation is taken over. And its not like you support Linux Foundation when you download one of the free distros.
