I don’t think it’s actually been rolled out to the app yet. When I load up the app, I see the old voice feature, not the new mode.

Wait, if it’s double-blind, wouldn’t the scientists be unaware of whether he got a placebo or the real drug? Although I suppose this could be after the study has concluded. I would bet that in real studies they record the side effects reported before checking to see if it was the placebo or not!

Oh yeah, that’s the one! It’s a very powerful scene. Crazy that it came out in 2011, a lot of it seemed so prescient. I watched it soon after the pandemic started, I think Netflix featured it around that time for obvious reasons.

So in addition to docker containers, you use separate VMs for isolation? Or are you just referring to the docker containers themselves?

I have separate docker containers for different apps too, but no virtualization beyond that.

Noob question. What kind of apps are you (or other self-hosters) running in VMs? With containerized apps, it seems like VMs would be largely unnecessary, unless you need some particular device to be virtualized? Or am I misunderstanding?

When sending and receiving Signal, iMessage and WhatsApp messages, Beeper’s web service acts as a relay. For example, if you send a message from Beeper to a friend on WhatsApp, the message is encrypted on your Beeper client, sent to the Beeper web service, which decrypts and re-encrypts the message with WhatsApp’s proprietary encryption protocol.

How do you mean? I’m actually kinda interested since I have friends on WhatsApp and Signal. Seems like it would make things more convenient by combining both messengers.

Good point. Most containers I’ve used do seem to use Alpine as a base. Found this StackOverflow post that compared native vs container performance, and containers fair really well!

Makes sense! I have a bunch of services (plex, radarr, sonarr, gluetun, etc) on my media server on Armbian running as docker containers. The ease of management is just something else! My HC2 doesn’t seem to break a sweat running about a dozen containers, so the overhead can’t be too bad.

Out of curiosity, is there much overhead to using docker than installing via curl and bash? I’m guessing there’s some redundant layers that docker uses?

How do I get -1 bread?

It doesn’t need to be in a container, but it works well in one for my use case. I use it in a headless server running OpenMediaVault with qBittorrent and a bunch of arr apps. The apps are all in containers sharing a network with port forwarding set up, so that none of them leak any DNS information.
