I’ve admittedly not looked much into games on Linux as it wasn’t my priority. I mostly played via steam on windows. What’s the equivalent route on Linux? Is steam available?

I was a pretty casual windows user, like just going along with its slow crapification because that was the path of least resistance. At work though via AWS I was exposed to various Linux desktop experiences and it was surprisingly fine. Then one day I was trying to do some mundane disk admin task that in Windows XP would have been fairly straight forward to root around in the control panel and find what to do. Searched in the windows 11 start bar for ‘disk management’ (or something similar, whatever it was it was exactly the name of the admin component). Did it find it? Did it heck. Instead it popped up bing (fucking bing??) web results complete with ads. Absolutely zero results for anything on the actual computer or remotely useful. I snapped. It’s done. Windows is crap and dead to me. Put Debian (personal preference) on my main boot drive, kept my windows disk just for the games I think will play better on it. That’s it, it’s over. Microsoft finally fucked it up and will have zero view of me except “this guy seems to play games periodically”. Adios you bloated pile of useless crap. You pour shame on our good memories of XP…

I think the quality contributors are probably not the ones moving to chatGPT…

Amazon’s cloud based Simple Storage Service (hence the S3). It is, in ELI5 terms, a file storage service like Microsoft’s OneDrive or Apple’s iCloud. A bit like a harddrive reached over the internet. You transfer files to and from it.

That’s grossly oversimplifying of course. S3 has some important technical differences to a straight up “cloud drive”. And it comes with a mind boggling array of options so it can be customised to be the storage of all sorts of very large real world applications and websites.

That’s what I used to be able to do. It was pressing the back and cancel buttons in some combination brought up a hidden menu where you could reset the toner levels. You can still bring the menu up on mine but now it ignores any reset you do.

Brother invalidates its laser cartridges after a certain number of revolutions irrespective of how much toner is left. You used to be able to override this manually but they removed that in a software update recently. Am livid. If you know different do you mind sharing what model you have?

There are GUI wrappers that issue the equivalent commands for you, but a lot of Linux users would just write something like this on the command line:

sudo apt install vlc

That’s how you would install VLC (media player) on Debian linux without any prior file download or browsing. It connects to the Debian repository for you, downloads and installs.

You don’t generally download the file like you would an exe or MSI on windows. Rather you enter a command line that tells Linux to connect to the repository (like an app store) of that particular type of Linux, pull the latest installation file and install it.

You can still download the file and install it directly, but it’s not a straightforward double click like on windows.

It may be what you say, the algorithm being dumb. Or it may be deliberate: you’ve shown yourself willing to categorize these annoying ads so you will be sent more so that fb can collect more data on them.
