Do custom ROMs still have issues with some apps not allowing them? It’s been an eternity since I tried one and I don’t know if it’s a hard requirement, but at least when I did try it, I had (?) to root my device and my bank apps refused to work after that.

Heck, I’d say even give money to those big corps so long as they are being reasonable with the price and availability. Reasonable varies by person, of course. But for me, I’ll pay for any $70-90 game (the normal price for new games now in Canada), but stuff like Sims DLC or how the original Mass Effect only let you get DLC through some dumb BioWare credits are cases where I’d pirate no regrets even with my current income.

After all, there won’t be AAA games if people don’t pay for them. I have (mostly) no qualms with big publishers pocketing a significant profit on those games if they get made well. Bigger problem I have is with games that get rushed to the point of impacting quality, but that’s something I see more for changing how you approach that individual title. Stuff like mistreating staff (crunch time) is a bit iffier. I still lean towards giving them my money, since nobody enters the game dev business without knowing it’ll involve crunch and I do want the devs to be rewarded for their hard work with a commercial success (cause that’s unfortunately just how success is measured in our capitalist society).

I mean, what kind of adventure would it be without a deal with at least one devil? Satan knows how to party.

I’m just finishing act 1 (no spoilers please) and my rampant stealing of everything remotely valuable seems to be paying off in my ability to buy literally anything that catches my eye. I kinda wonder if I’m overdoing it with how much gold I have vs the price of things so far, but I don’t want to risk encountering a trader with amazing stuff that I can’t afford.

I still have lots of room for even modest gear improvements. eg, not all of my party members even have 2 rings yet, let alone gear that is genuinely useful to their play style. And some of my characters have some gear that are very niche usage that I’m keeping an eye out for something that will give them an edge in combat.

Yeaaaah, that’s sketchy. I can understand them blocking the communities out of fear of legal risk. They didn’t sign up for that kinda risk and we all know that piracy oriented sites get targeted by legal action (isn’t there currently an ongoing attempt to get Reddit to turn over user info about people who accessed piracy communities there?). But why the heck would they hide that they blocked the communities?

It’s the same as with Hexbear. I can understand why they defederated from that instance, since I’ve seen how they comment. They’re extremely aggressive. Even when they’re right, they’re assholes about it. And they’re often straight up supporting Russia, which is batshit crazy (they have no nuance, acting as if there can’t both be Nazis in Ukraine and Russia can also be an evil aggressor). But Lemmy.World was happy to silently defederate until they got called out. Even despite the fact that for Exploding Heads, they at least had a big post about it (even though Exploding Heads is far worse).

I’m not sure what you’re expecting Apple to do or why you think they’d want to just shut something down entirely because some people misuse it. Misuse applies to nearly everything.

That’s misleading because that’s not that often. Most of the cops are beating up innocent black people, shooting your beloved dog, and performing no knock warrants on the wrong house.

There’s AI that can sometimes do hands okay. It still often fucks up, so a human has to curate the work. And ideally selectively prompt the AI to regenerate parts of the image until the whole thing is perfect. I think Midjourney has the best performance so far. You can take a look for yourself in one of the many AI art communities. They’re sadly not as active here as they were on Reddit, but there’s imageai and stablediffusion communities (I forget the instance)

Ugh, I have cringy memories from myself as a kid in the earlier days of Facebook, overusing that poke feature because I was a dumb, extremely awkward kid who had no idea how to socialize so I mostly just annoyed people. Had such a bad “lol im so raaaandum” phase.

It’s bizzare that they haven’t made raids act simply as “portals” to a match making system. That would somewhat solve the rural raiding issue while still encouraging people to get out.

Feels like a tragedy of the commons sorta thing. Most people would use air tags responsibly, but a small number of people abuse them and thus kinda ruin them for everyone. We can’t have nice things because people suck.

Eh, the only problem I have is that it spills into so many communities and that makes it hard to curate your feed. Personally, I do want to see some Reddit stuff. I’m both curious and just plain amused by the drama. But I don’t want my feed dominated by it and try to limit my subscriptions of Reddit related communities.

Plus I can only see so many "fuck spez"s until I’m pretty bored of em. Can I at least see interesting drama? Where’s spez coming up with a new way to insult mods?

I’m not sure if it’s even just as easy as “use Firefox” like the original comment implies. For your web browser, sure. But presumably these root certs are used by all apps. And thus many apps that depend on the internet would break (most wouldn’t do what Firefox does and being your own root CA certs).

Yeah, it’s unfathomable how huge Instagram is. That’s a massive number of people who could be easily informed “hey, wanna try our new product?” As an aside, when I googled it, it said there was 2 billion active Instagram users.

I find it silly when people act skeptical of Threads’ numbers, since Meta only needed a tiny number of their existing user base to try it out.

But if we’re drawing the line at “did it for profit”, how much technological advancement will happen? I suspect most advancement is profit driven. Obviously people should be paid for any work they actually put in, but we’re talking about content on the internet that you willingly create for fun and the fact it’s used by someone else for profit is a side thing.

And quite frankly, there’s no way to pay you for this. No company is gonna pay you to use your social media comments to train their AI and even if they did, your share would likely be pennies at best. The only people who would get paid would be companies like reddit and Twitter, which would just write into their terms of service that they’re allowed to do that (and I mean, they already use your data for targeting ads and it’s of course visible to anyone on the internet).

So it’s really a choice between helping train AI (which could be viewed as a net benefit for society, depending on how you view those AIs) vs simply not helping train them.

Also, if we’re requiring payment, only the super big AI companies can afford to frankly pay anything at all. Training an AI is already so expensive that it’s hard enough for small players to enter this business without having to pay for training data too (and at insane prices, if Twitter and Reddit are any indication).
