Wait wait wait , what happened
Lemme.ee got so toxic that the admins bailed. Nobody in the community supported the leads or stepped up to replace them. Whomever was fronting the money to keep the instance hosted got fed up and decided to shut it down.
Now there’s a big ceremonial cry-in for an instance that ate itself with dysfunction, because… idfk.
That’s not what happened. It wasn’t any more or less toxic than any other place on the internet, the lead admin just got burnt out. He asked the community for volunteers to moderate the instance and apparently nobody showed up.
So he’s shutting down the instance next month. It wasn’t dysfunctional or toxic, he just sacrificed a lot and AFAIK never even broke even with server costs.
The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.
Yeah, I gave volunteering a good, long think because I’m mostly sure I’ve got the right proficiencies for it, but my plate’s already overflowing as it is. I like lemm.ee, but when I sat down and considered my priorities IRL, I am legitimately sorry to say that it didn’t make the cut. I guess everyone else did that same math.

I’ve modded some small but active enough to need real coverage subs on reddit. It’s a real job. People are too weird to self-moderate.

Talk about over exaggeration lol. Lemm.ee was fine and well run, I enjoyed it more than being on .world. They just didn’t have enough people willing to be admins.

So what’s the difference between that and .world? Maybe I’m not looking hard enough, but I don’t see any “about us” pages for these Lemmy servers
Scroll down to the bottom of both instances’ home pages using the default lemmy UI. You’ll see the version of lemmy they use. You’ll also see a link labeled as Legal, which contains most of the instance’s policies. The Instances link will show you what instances they are federated and defederated with. The modlog can also give you some insight on what’s happening on the instance. Combine that with all the other information on their sidebars and you’ll get a rough idea of how different they are managed.
It also helps if you’ve been on lemmy for a while because you would’ve directly experienced or witnessed any issues or controversies those instances have been involved with.

I understand the decision and hold no ill will towards the admin team, I just think lemm.ee was exactly everything I wanted from an instance and am truly sad to not only lose the account history being associated with me, but also the most neutral of the instances.

For those looking where to head, here’s where I picked.
Now don’t get me wrong, I am not hype about moving from a great instance, but I feel this has been a great demonstration of why the federation is a good idea. All in all, migrating has been a fairly smooth experience, and most communities are either on other places or are moving fairly structured. Previously, closure of services or enshitification has caused me to spend weeks to months hunting for new places to read. This has been a great experience in most ways, and I think I can live happily jumping from instance to instance like this for a few years until I give up and set up my own.
Also, old content won’t be gone. It’ll still be around. Hell, people can still even reply to stuff. Inactive lemm.ee communities won’t have new comments propagate to instances past where the original commenter is from, but still!

Can you transfer your account to a different instance yet?
Partially, at least not what I use regularly. The account settings has a system for exporting settings, communities and block lists. You cant really retroactively move comments and posts to have been made by another user, but making a post on both the old and new users claiming eachother should propagate to other instances and be archived correctly.
I hope they find a good new home.
I don’t know what most of the instances are about, but this one had a clever name and I don’t believe is federated with Hexbear. So here I am.

The user interface with SLRPNK is good, if you’re still looking. I joined it just before kbin died and it’s done a pretty good job filling the hole reddit left, better than kbin anyway.
I tried to get the hang of blahaj.zone while SLRPNK was down recently and just couldn’t with how follow people/profile centric it is, or how awkward it was finding posts I’m interested in. I liked the cat widget though, reminded me of that ancient Felix browser add on.

Idk I’m on lemmy.world and it seems fine? I think it’s just the default for most people since it was one of the earliest if not the first instance, would have to look it up.
The .world TDL makes it sound universal and it didn’t get a reputation as THE place for Mao cultists or whatever like .ml did. So lemmy.world isn’t the center of the lemmyverse but it is in the middle.

My first instance shut down permanently within days of my signing up. I believe it had sometime remotely doing with Russia suddenly deciding to invade Ukraine.
It really gave me that full cyberpunk experience.
My first instance also shut down pretty quickly after I started using it, but not for major conflict reasons. I’ll get the cyberpunk experience some other time I guess… 😔

Ok, any advice where we should move?
I’m on SDF for its no-defederation policy and because SDF outside of Lemmy has a proven track record of public service and longevity. Like SDF is much older than I am. Occasionally there are hiccups and the SDF team is a bit slow to respond, but otherwise it’s been a good time. And the people here seem pretty chill too.
For my needs it’s the best one. But you might want something with a curated feed, a particular political orientation, a smaller or less crowded instance, or something else.
I’ve applied for .zip; is .sdf a more general purpose instance?
I honestly don’t know. I haven’t had to change instances for a while.

the advice i’ve heard is pick one that isn’t too big but not too small either. spend some time looking at the local communities to see if they align with what you want. .zip is focused on gaming and tech which is me. others are politics heavy. some are widely defederated, which may be the only thing that really matters-- you don’t want one that everyone can’t stand (.ml, etc)

I went with sopuli.xyz. People are friendly and the instance is stable.
I don’t love their decision to defederate hexbear, but otherwise I like this instance.
Not to say I don’t understand their reasoning for defederating, because I do, I just prefer as little defeds as possible aside from corporate influence (fuck threads)

If you are into solar punk slrpnk.net has been amazing for me. Due to some weird timing with the admin being out of town when the servers went down they’re down right now for a bit, so I’m not sure when they’ll be back up and running. But the current situation is a hiccup, not a consistent issue. I love the server, and if anything, the community reaction to the admin being unable to fix this for a few weeks has made me love it even more.
I’m moving to both piefed and .zip
there is one issue that I’ve found - my work blocks lemmy.zip, so I’m using the piefed account I made to test it.
My guess is that it ends in “.zip” and is getting blocked, b/c the rest of lemmy they aren’t bothering with.
This is exactly why allowing .zip as a gTLD was such a damn stupid move.
